Hamburg
Herzog+de Meuron
2007/2016

The tallest residential building in Hamburg is a concert hall constructed on top of a warehouse in a harbor. The architects cite as its main influences the ancient Greek theatre at Delphi, sports arenas and tents. It is referred to colloquially as Elphi.

The Norddeutscher Rundfunk Elbphilharmonie (musical director Alan Gilbert) is the hall’s resident orchestra. The Großer Saal has a seating capacity of 2,100. The terraced “vineyard” seating plan brings the audience closer to the stage than the traditional “shoebox” style, which is used in the Kleiner Saal.

The mixed use building comprises the music hall, a music education facility, a Westin hotel, a parking structure and the inevitable luxury residences. The final cost of the project: €870 million.
